Scrap 911. I need advice.

I decided to attack any fabric smaller than a fat quarter and began a scrappy triple 4-patch. I started out doing it somewhat orderly and then gave that up when I had too many orphan blocks.  Right now I'm at 40x40.  I felt the need to make a quilt for a child and I don't know who the child  is (just that it is not one of mine).  This quilt needs SOMETHING but I'm not sure what (please don't say the trash can!)

Do I...
Add more blocks?
Add a calm border?
Anything???

  1. I don't know that it needs anything honestly. When you quilt it and go to finish it - I would use a solid back and binding to "calm it down" a little. I love it tho! You could do a border around it if it is too busy - but I like busy.

  2. Maybe add a simpler border or if you want to keep it under 40" to save on backing, then maybe add one more row to make a rectangle instead of square, if they are 4" blocks ( I counted 10 across) so maybe 2 rows, if not, it's great as it is, maybe a solid binding, kids like funky bright quilts....

  3. That is what I would do...add a simple, solid border. It will stop the motion and contain the fun. (which this quilt has plenty of...fun!)

  4. Plain white border and Bob's your proverbial mother's brother...

  5. I love it! If you have more scraps, sew them all together and make your binding out of that. It's scrappy so I say go with the theme all the way!

  6. I think I would put a narrow pink border, then a little wider green border using tiny print fabric. That would give your eyes a place to rest with all the fun frenzy going on in the middle. It looks wonderfully scrappy!

  7. im with the no border folks... it funky fun and that should never be contained! If you dont put a border do a solid binding... if you decide to do a calmer border do a scrappy binding. (i also agree add a row or two to make it rectangular rather than square)

  8. Yes a simple border or binding. But sorry, Katy, I would avoid white if it is for kids, it will get grubby too fast. Green is good [or perhaps MMH's idea of a scrapped-binding]

But is IS a fabulous project - well done. I am sure it will be greatly loved

  9. Add a few borders in different sizes. End with some extra blocks on the corners. I like it. Busy, but fun!

  10. I'm a no border kind of girl. It has an i-spy look to it so all I would add is maybe another row or two if you want to make it bigger and then bind it with a dark solid.

But now that I look at it again, you could also bind it with a brighter solid like aqua to frame the quilt. It's almost like adding a border but doing it with the binding instead.

Some kid is going to love it. Holla!

  11. When I looked at it a simple BLACK border was the first thing to come to mind, I also like white, but if it is for a kid...I think I would stick with black! Oh, and to me this SCREAMS DOTS for binging! I'm just saying! I love a good scrap quilt!!!

  12. Maybe a double solid border. A thin and a thicker one two different solids. But any which way, I really like it.

  13. oh wow, I LOVE IT!!! it's such a great scrappy quilt! i also like the idea of a black (maybe with white polka dots) border. i think it would pick up the black in the scrappy blocks nicely.

  14. I think you should add some borders by picking a color out of the scrappy quilt (which I love) to help tie it all together. Very nice use of your scraps.

  15. I think a solid red border would be great as it would pull out the little bits of red that are in the scrappy quilt and bind it with black. It looks like you have lots of suggestions to choose from! :) Can't wait to see what you decide to do!

  16. A solid border would help to contain all the color. Do you have a homeless shelter that needs quilts? I'm currently make one for our local shelter. Kathie L in Allentown

  20. I love it. I would add a stop border of about an inch in kona solid black or navy (I can't tell online if you used blue or black in some of the blocks) and then a 4 inch outer border of kona solid tangerine, then binding in the black (blue) and white check on the bias.

  22. I love it! I would do a dark solid binding, or a small border and scrappy binding. Today I am laying out my charm packs and cutting my background fabric to make your Road to Tennessee quilt. Thanks for the pattern!

  23. If it was mine.....I would cut it into large squares and then put sashing in-between the squares.....I was told by this awsome teacher if you have a busy quilt it needs one fabric the same in it to settle the eye.
