Finish: Turtle Cheesecake baby quilt

Our neighbor is going to be a grandma very soon and I decided to make a baby quilt for them.  I had this beautiful Lily & Will 2 layer cake (well, remnants of one!) from another project and I knew it would find a nice home with a baby some day.  The fabric looks like a yummy cheesecake with chocolate drizzled on top.  This is the softest quilt I've ever pulled out of a drier.  Turtle Cheesecake seemed like a great name idea.  I staggered 5" squares so I didn't have to worry about matching points.  I needed a project like that.

On the back, I used the leftover prints plus some Moda Bella Jelly Roll strips I had hanging around from an MBS project.  I know everybody loves the bunnies but I put those on the back.  I have a feeling this is going to be a manly little man and I didn't know how the bunnies would go over.
I took quilting inspiration from this little vine print.  I had done this quilting motif before so it was a no brainer to do it for this quilt when I saw that print.
I actually don't make a lot of quilts for babies.  I could be wrong, but I get the feeling a lot of people would just prefer diapers or cash.  Let's just say I speak from personal experience on this one.  Now I will only make baby quilts when I feel that is something they would prefer over a store bought gift.  This grandma-to-has done a lot of nice things for us as a family from a cream cheese roll for Thanksgiving breakfast to cookies at Christmas and the occasional child-watching in a pinch. My husband had her come over for 30 minutes during my monthly craft night so he could make an emergency supply run (aka: he could not find the toilet paper in my messy garage).  When he returned she told him how much she loved all the quilts in the house.  It is people like that who get me excited about gifting a quilt.

How do you decide whom to make a quilt for?

  2. I don't think I"ve ever really thought about it before but sometimes it just comes to me that that person would appreciate it. The one I was least sure of was just a situation where I had more scraps and time than money. I think she and her little man appreciated it more than any other one I've made. He turned two just a week ago and I still see pictures with his quilt in the background.

The last baby quilt I made was a tryout for a larger quilt I want to make. And not sure why I thought people I barely knew would appreciate a quilt. It was my best friend's brother's premie's quilt (follow that?). I was just glad it served a purpose since it wasn't appreciated for more than the thought. Wish I'd kept the quilt though.

  3. i've made quilts for my family members and for a few baby showers. i know that there's nothing like sleeping under a warm quilt, or cuddling under one when you're sick, so i suually give them to people who look like they need a wrm hug.

  4. Yum! I really love the colors AND the name!

I give quilts only to people who have truly expressed an appreciation for handmade items. I also enjoy giving quilts to those who are creative themselves. One of the best reactions I have ever received was from my cousin who is a hairstylist. I was pretty positive that being creative and "edgy" herself, she would appreciate an improv-style quilt and I was right!

  5. My family expects baby quilts from me so I don't think I've gotten the rejection-vibe. However, with Lily & Will... even if Moda decided to not reprint the green (my favorite colorway)... how can you go wrong? Great quilt! I love it!!!

I absolutely LOVE the chocolate. I keep telling myself that I need to make a chocolate quilt. But, next up...Peanuts. Starting next week. Hurray!!!

  7. I made a quilt for my nephew. I was a little nervous giving it to him because the parents were 20 and 18 at the time. What 18 year old can appreciate a quilt? But surprise, she hugged it, teared up, and said that was the one thing he needed: a homemade quilt. I also gave one to the reverend who married us. I had never met her before. Turns out, she's a quilter and was so impressed and touched by the quilt. So you never know! I like to trust my intuition!
